About Anthropic Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the Role: The Encodings Infra team maintains the libraries that engineers and researchers across Anthropic use to encode text and multimodal data into a form that Claude can consume. It also determines Claude’s prompt shape: how a user’s turn is represented to the model, how Claude calls tools and receives tool results, and so on. As a Software Engineer on this team, you'll own the design and maintenance of these libraries—keeping their APIs intuitive, their performance sharp, and their abstractions solid enough that most of the org never has to think about encodings or prompt structures at all. You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that your work enabled Claude to learn new ways of understanding the world. This role is unusually broad: your work will touch systems across the codebase, from pretraining to finetuning to the API, and you'll collaborate closely with both researchers and engineers to make sure new encoding ideas can move quickly from experiment to production. Responsibilities: Maintain and improve the encoding libraries used by engineers and researchers across Anthropic Run experiments to determine the optimal way to feed structured data into Claude without confusing it Design data structures and abstractions that shield most of the organization from the details of how encoded data works while enabling “power users” Adapt the encoding libraries to support new research directions as they emerge, and make sure that we can ship these research ideas to production Optimize encoding performance across the systems that depend on these libraries You may be a good fit if you: Have 5+ years of software engineering experience, with meaningful time spent maintaining libraries, SDKs, or developer-facing APIs Have familiarity with ML terminology and LLM architecture — you don't need to be an ML expert, but enough understanding to work effectively alongside researchers and understand the results of experiments Have experience carrying out complex refactors in large codebases Have strong communication skills and enjoy working closely with researchers and engineers to understand what they need Are results-oriented, with a bias towards flexibility and impact Pick up slack, even if it goes outside your job description Care about the societal impacts of your work Strong candidates may also have experience with: Tokenizers or other text/data encoding systems Maintaining a widely-used library over a long period of time Performance optimization Python and/or Rust Reinforcement learning or model training infrastructure Representative projects: Working with a research team to ship a new multimodal data type (audio, video, etc) to production Redesigning a core abstraction so that we can change how data is encoded into Claude without breaking downstream teams The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $320,000 — $405,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. Your safety matters to us. How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role We are looking for software engineers to help build safety and oversight mechanisms for our AI systems. As a software engineer on the Safeguards team, you will work to monitor models, prevent misuse, and ensure user well-being. This role will focus on building distributed and scalable systems to detect unwanted model behaviors and prevent disallowed use of models. You will apply your technical skills to uphold our principles of safety, transparency, and oversight while enforcing our terms of service and acceptable use policies. Responsibilities: Independently scope and lead complex, multi-month infrastructure projects, from an ambiguous starting point through to a production system Develop monitoring systems to detect unwanted behaviors from our API partners and potentially take automated enforcement actions; surface these in internal dashboards to analysts for manual review Stand up and run deployments of those monitoring systems across multiple clouds, including inside cloud-provider partner environments where data residency laws apply. Keep the deployments consistent through shared deployment pipelines, smoke tests, observability, and alerting Design and harden the sandboxed runtime that AI agents execute in: isolation, network egress controls, least-privilege data access, audit logging, and insider-risk controls Manage cost and capacity for large volumes of long-running agent work, and set and meet service-level objectives for the platform Partner with the engineers and researchers who write and evaluate the monitoring agents, and with security, privacy, and legal teams, so new detection work can ship quickly on a platform everyone trusts You may be a good fit if you: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or comparable experience Proficiency in Python, Distributed Systems, and Infrastructure as Code Have worked across multiple cloud providers, or built infrastructure designed to be provider-agnostic Have built and operated large-scale, distributed infrastructure, such as data platforms, control planes, or job schedulers Have experience with sandboxing and isolation technologies (containers, microVMs, network policy) or with a systems language such as Rust Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders Strong candidates may also: 8+ years of experience in a software engineering position, not including internships Have built systems that handle sensitive or regulated data, with requirements around access control, auditability, retention, and data residency Have experience running LLM-based agents in production Have experience with integrity, spam, fraud, or abuse detection and mitigation Deadline to apply: None. About Beneficial Deployments Beneficial Deployments ensures AI reaches and benefits the communities that need it most. We partner with nonprofits, foundations, and mission-driven organizations to deploy Claude in education, global health, economic mobility, and life sciences- focusing on raising the floor for those who need it most. About the Role We're looking for an Applied AI Engineer to join our Beneficial Deployments team, focused on maximizing the impact of Claude in the life sciences. Our goal is ambitious: accelerate scientific progress from R&D through translation. That means making Claude the go-to tool for the life sciences ecosystem from early discovery in academia to paradigm shifting biotech to reimagining pharma pipelines - and building the technical infrastructure to back that up. You'll work directly with flagship research partners like The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and The Allen Institute, embedded in their scientific workflows. This isn't consulting from the outside - you'll be building alongside their engineers, prototyping agents that fit into real research pipelines, and developing the ecosystem-level tooling (MCP servers, benchmarks, reusable agent skills) that extends Claude's usefulness across the broader life sciences community. This role will be part of the founding Beneficial Deployments Applied AI team focused on bringing life sciences closer to the frontier. Responsibilities Partner deeply with flagship life sciences research institutions - understand their scientific workflows end-to-end, build hands-on with their engineering teams, and help take projects from early exploration to production systems integrated into how they do science day-to-day. Develop reusable ecosystem infrastructure, like MCP servers for domain-specific data sources (genomics platforms, literature databases, experimental repositories), instruments, scientifically-grounded benchmarks, and agent skills that other institutions can adopt without starting from scratch. Identify what's actually hard about deploying AI in life sciences (heterogeneous data, auditability requirements, the prototype-to-trust gap) and feed those findings back to product, engineering, and research. Create technical content and documentation that lets partners self-serve, so what works for one institution can scale globally without the same level of hand-holding. You Might Be a Good Fit If You Have: Deep research experience in life sciences, biomedical research, or scientific computing. Bonus if you've studied genomics, neuroscience, or drug discovery specifically and are comfortable getting deeply technical with academics. Experience building LLM-powered tools or applications: prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks. Builder credibility from shipping production code as a software engineer, forward-deployed engineer, or technical founder. A scrappy mentality–comfortable wearing multiple hats, building from scratch, driving clarity in ambiguous situations, and doing whatever it takes to further the mission. The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: £225,000 — £255,000 GBP Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. About the role The Safeguards team is responsible for ensuring our models and products are developed and deployed safely. We're looking for engineers for our Review Tooling team, which builds the systems that humans — and increasingly Claude — use to investigate potential harms and take enforcement actions across Anthropic's first-party products and third-party cloud platforms. You'll own the tools our safety investigators rely on to understand what's happening on our platforms and act on it, as well as the platform underneath those tools. That platform includes data analysis capabilities, privacy-preserving primitives that keep review workflows compatible with our data retention commitments, and a sandbox environment where new review interfaces and workflows can be built and iterated quickly. These are internal tools, but they are anything but low-stakes: the speed, clarity, and reliability of this tooling directly determines how quickly Anthropic can identify harmful behavior, make sound enforcement decisions, and feed signals back into model training and safety classifiers. You'll partner closely with policy, operations, data science, legal, and privacy teams to ensure our enforcement systems are effective, accurate, and trustworthy. Key responsibilities Build investigation, review, and enforcement tooling for both first-party and third-party platform surfaces — including case queues, investigation views, decision and audit logging, and account-actioning workflows Develop the platform layer of reusable APIs, data storage, and backend services that lets new review workflows be stood up quickly and safely Stand up and run deployments of this tooling across multiple clouds, including inside cloud-provider partner environments where data must stay in place. Keep the deployments consistent through shared deployment pipelines, smoke tests, observability, and alerting Scale review through automation, including enabling reviewers to use Claude effectively and building toward Claude-assisted and Claude-driven review workflows Partner with policy, operations, legal, privacy, and data science stakeholders to translate enforcement and investigation needs into reliable, well-designed systems that measurably reduce handling time and decision error Instrument the tools you ship — surfacing metrics on queue health, reviewer throughput, and decision quality — and ensure tooling evolves alongside new privacy primitives and data retention commitments Minimum qualifications A technical background in full-stack or platform engineering, with the ability to engage deeply in architecture and design discussions Experience shipping internal tools or platforms with demanding operational users, and a track record of improving their workflows measurably Experience working cross-functionally with non-engineering partners such as operations, policy, or legal teams Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders Care about the societal impacts of AI and want your work to make powerful systems safer Preferred qualifications 8+ years of industry software engineering experience Experience building data labeling, trust and safety, integrity, fraud, or abuse-prevention tooling, or other systems supporting human review at scale Have built systems that handle sensitive or regulated data, with requirements around access control, auditability, retention, and data residency Have worked across multiple cloud providers, or built infrastructure designed to be provider-agnostic A product-minded approach to internal users: you work directly with the people using your tools, watch where they struggle, and fix it The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $320,000 — $485,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time.
